What We Love About Preston Hollow Rotary Club

Cheryl Drane-Skipworth

What I love most about Rotary is the power of collective impact.

I may not have the means to start my own foundation, but by joining a global network of over a million members, I’ve found a way to help move mountains. Though my club is small, it’s fiercely effective, giving us the flexibility to step in where traditional systems leave gaps — both at home and abroad.

On Long-Term Impact: The true measure of Rotary’s work reveals itself over time. Recently, a past RYLA participant and club scholarship recipient shared how Rotary transformed not just her life, but her parents’, her siblings’, and her entire classroom. Ten years later, it’s incredibly fulfilling to witness how our early investments continue to create lasting, multi-generational change.

On Supporting Educators & the Arts: Imagine being the first in your family to graduate high school, then college, and eventually becoming a teacher — with Rotary as your catalyst and continued supporter. This year, our club awarded a grant to a local 4th/5th-grade educator so she could purchase essential classroom supplies. You can’t nurture creativity without the right tools, and because our club deeply values the arts, we knew this investment would pay forward. That’s what I love about Rotary: it doesn’t just fund projects; it fuels futures.

Being part of the Preston Hollow Rotary Club has truly become one of the greatest blessings in my life. From the moment I walked into my first meeting, I felt welcomed, supported, and surrounded by people who genuinely care about service, community, and each other. Rotary has become my second family, and every gathering—whether it’s a weekly meeting, a club social, a service project, or a fundraising event—feels like coming home.

One of my most cherished Rotary memories was hosting our Youth Exchange student, Jakob. When he arrived at the airport, our club showed up in full force to give him a BIG TEXAS welcome home. Seeing our members greet him with open arms, smiles, and that unmistakable Rotary warmth reminded me exactly why this club means so much to me. We made so many memories during his time here, and we’re already creating many more.

Preston Hollow Rotary isn’t just a club—it’s a community of heart, purpose, and lifelong friendships. I’m grateful every day to be part of it.

Rotary provides opportunities to help others and improve the world in a structure that supports these efforts – at the local, statewide, national, and international level. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in 46,000 Rotary clubs across just about every country in the world. While coordinated across the world, clubs have individual personalities and projects. Rotarians are both leaders and team members. Bring an idea and passion and watch Rotarians take action.

Twenty years ago, I volunteered for what I thought would be a one-and-done weeklong effort at a 20+ year old Rotary eye clinic in Mexico started by one Rotarian in Texas. Now, 20 years later (and 40 years after it started), I help run the clinic. Rotary lets me improve the world in ways that I could never do myself in projects that I never could have envisioned with camaraderie forged from shared values and action.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 12:00 PM. Guests are welcome—come say hello and learn what we’re working on next.
